Allan,
I agree that letter grades are not the best method for communicating
assessments. But, letter gradeas are unfortunately a part of the current
education environment, along with exams and one-off assessments. My post
was to suggest that the negative impact of letter grades may be
ameliorated if used in concert with outcomes and competencies.
It is my belief that assessment must be perosnalised, cover a range of
expected competencies and clearly provide feedback on areas of strength,
weakness and help to develop a joint plan for improvement.
