I think that flatland holism (low order complexity) and the employee
ranking discussions can get misdirected if we forget that there are
different metrics/standards/scales to use. Just as Howard Gardner teaches
us that there are multiple intelligences (MI) and there are different
personality types that help build effective teams (the analytic, the
extrovert, the pragmatic, the amiable). So, while I agree people need to
be assessed and good employees need to be kept, grown, and encouraged...we
need to ask the fundamental questions first: good for what, when, under
what circumstances. For that managment needs to know where it is going
and not shoot arrows into the woods and run and draw rings around where
the arrows land. ...grin....
