A quote from a book I just read comes to mind after reading the recent
Leadership Definitions posts:
With the best of leaders,
When the work is done,
The project completed,
The people all say
"We did it ourselves."
from "The Tao of Personal Leadership" by Diane Dreher.
More and more of what I do as an engineering team leader seems to align
with these latest definitions. It seems the less I do, the less I
"manage", the more I build good relationships with my fellow team members
and rely on their abilities, the better the engineering team performs. So
I really end up trying to minimize outside politics, management practices
etc. that at one time seemed to make sense, but now appear
counter-productive and hinder team growth, learning and therefore overall
performance.
My struggle though, at times when I see everyone in the team engaged and
working together well, is trying to determine what I should be doing next.
This most likely is my present "learning opportunity".
