John asks:
"I am wondering if anyone has done any work on the systemic effects of
individual pay for performance and its effect on productivity and employee
engagement."
John, Roxanne and I have a long and respectful -- on my side --
disagreement on this issue. Rather than espouse one or another position,
I suggest you do the following: Request the names of operating managers
in companies that a) do not use pay for performance systems, b) claim to
achieve high performance on standard financial measures, and c) have solid
measures of employee satisfaction. Benchmark those people, and let me
know what you find out.
