You might try looking at Bob Quinn's work on "competing competences" for a
different approach. Quinn and his colleagues argue that managerial
competences are inherently contradictory as they are based on competing
values - e.g. the values underpinning say "mentoring" are very different
from those underpinning "directing".

I find these approaches have a lot of 'face validity' with managers and are
also extremely interesting theoretically.
