Replying to LO18509 --

First, I think we need to disspell the notion that the only way to get
life satsifaction, including pecuniary rewards is by "going sideways"
into management. Industry has recognized this for sometime when giving
parallel paths of growth in the technical and management arenas and this
will filter through the learning organizations. Second, with lifelong
learning, there is no reason to suspect that the only skills which will be
offerred, taken or developed will be in the technical side. So there will
be more paths to managment. The traditional institutions would like us to
think that there is only one path, through their academic programs. In
fact, the rise of the corporate university is in many ways in direct
response of the failure of traditional institutions to provide these key
skills and also the need for coprorations to tailor these skills to the
corporate culture. The "sideways" remark, above, is traditional Myth for
marketing purposes.

Third, "degree" is, in many ways a marketing tool in a world where
competency and quality are in the front. Certification and certifiers,
except for certain "medallion" institutions may be moot, in the future

Rasising of certification by the Academy and at the same time arguing
about the value of the on-campus experiece, for which there is no
certification, is speaking with a forked tongue.
