John, interested in your comments. I find the following a useful tool,
especially when working with people who are used to equations! Sometimes
I have to put it into English for the non technical people <G>. I don't
know the origin, I just found it lying around somewhere in the deep
distant past.....
The Equation of Change
----------------------
Change will not take place unless :-
f(V,D,S)>R
Where
V = The Vision of the Future
D = Dissatisfaction with the present
S = Knowing the first Steps to take
R = The cost of change (time, money, discomfort)
I have worked with companies who have had various permutations in place,
and some who have had none! I find when only one element is missing, it's
often a case of 'light the blue touch paper' and retire - fast!
Just in case this metaphor may not be used elsewhere - 'light the blue
touch paper' - as in a firework / firecracker.
