I feel a compare and contrast of mental models coming on...
I took it differently. That may be explained by the meaning I give words.
"Effort you expend" does not mean monetary value to me although it could
include that among other, broader meanings. Like you I paused and thought,
and asked myself where my mental model came from. I think it came from
home. My father at the time was pretty intellectually curious and I think
I developed a love of learning from that.
Also, early in my career I was lucky to have a series of terrific managers
who taught me to strive for excellence for its own sake. I put a lot of
effort into that, learned a lot and was able to move outside a "they don't
pay me enough to do that" mental model.
As it turned out, those two habits also produced a decent amount of money.
So there's an economic component to be sure.
