There was discussion some time ago on "jargon" on the list. Perhaps
referring to that thread can save some bandwidth here. All good students
need to seek the history of the theory on their own, when it's not a
course offering. Check the archives. If there are any "eternal truths" or
"essentialities" you think were missed, we can come back to it.
