Dear Bill, there are many different citation styles:
- APA - American Psychological Association (covers most of the social
sciences)
- MLA - Modern Language Association
- Chicago Style (used by some top tier publishers)
- etc.
And then there are different editions within each convention-- that is --
you may use one of the last few editions (since there are often only minor
changes).
Bottom line: Inform yourself what style the publisher requires (they are
often very specific). And if they don't have a preference, choose one
that fits your discipline and "be consistent!!!". Don't mix different APA
editions or different conventions.
You will probably want to borrow or buy a manual; or, if you will be
writing much, there are some excellent citation software programs
available.
