Hi, folks--
After extended discussion, I think we found ourselves agreeing violently
with each other. I think I'll go back to lurking quietly, but first I
have one point of clarification and one thought:
1. Competencies are not necessarily static in the manner described by
John Gunkler--when done properly. They are descriptions of behaviors,
thoughts, and feelings. When presented in their interrelationships
(rarely done, but I did and at least certain people at Hay/McBer generally
do), they work better, as you might expect. "Laundry list models" are
just as static as John would suggest.
2. Doug Merchant said:
Unfortunately, the current L-O community is so focused on the individual
learner as to be culturally and perceptually impaired when it comes to
organizational level learning.
I think I agree on the individual focus, if this listserv is
characteristic of the discussion, but fortunately there are learning
organizations forming and working independent of those who count
themselves part of the community. So I am more optimistic--if we look at
what is happening, we can learn.
