Replying to LO21604, ..07, ..17, ..11
dear LO missionars,
I have three points that I would like to ask for more information from you
and others.
1. I was reading with great interest the different answers to the
question about mission statements, enjoying the (as usual on this string)
enormous diversity in them. I have noticed over the last weeks, that
frequently, when practical questions come up, like this one, or for
example some time ago 'teaching new ideas to old organisations", or even
before that how to facilitate a group where a smaller part is very verbal
and a larger part is very quiet, many of the answers are diametrally
opposite (can you say this in English?, "diametral entgegengesetzt" in
German). The authors frequently back up their viewpoints with a series of
experiences, which led them to the conclusion that this was really the
only or at least the best way to go, not infrequently excluding something
that somebody else is taking for cutting edge answer. As I assume that
most of the contributors on this string must be somewhat successful at
what they are doing, since they can afford a computer to write their
messages with, I take it that the all of the various answers must have
their merits in certain situations, or with certain personalities,
facilitator types, etc. I wonder what other people think about this, why
can different people have success with opposite strategies that are
partially based on rationals and mental models that are in complete
contradiction to others that are being used with equally valid success. I
am interested how this is related to John's junk science, since maybe
working with an organisation is more an art than a science.
2. In the answers to the question about the mission statement, I detected
in several answers a partial attitude, that the CEO, or the management,
etc, are sort of incapable and not to be trusted with this question. I
wonder if I got that right, and if so, if you could say more about it. I
have in my work come to believe, that the moment I feel this about a
particular leadership group, they will feel it, too, consciously or
unconsciously, and we will end up having an open or covert battle over who
knows more. I wonder if you ever experience something like this, and if
yes, how you use it in your facilitation.
3. I find it highly cruel, that HJRobles in LO 21602 first leads us
through that dinner including the experience of 6 star service, then rubs
the desert into us, and then does not mention the name of the restaurant.
greetings
Max
