Dear friends,
Speaking from "down under" I would like to say that overall, I do enjoy
the list. Like Robert Bacall, I sometimes switch off, sometimes get
exasperated, sometimes wish some people would post less, and at other
times, that some folk would post more; but overall I enjoy the
participation and the notion of picking up messages 12-16 hours late!
However, like any complex network-system, a list will ebb and flow. We
seem to be going through a gentler, less "fanatical" phase at the moment.
Posts, on the whole, are more reflective and inquiring: or is that just my
perception given the place I am at?
What have I got out of the list?
- some new ideas (the occasional post gets printed and stuck on the wall
opposite my desk. Up there at the moment are posts from Winfried and Ed
Rosch: thanks guys! Harriet has also contributed some thought pieces that
I have gone back to)
- a sense of belonging to a community beyond my organisation/business and
beyond my shores; people interested in what I am interested in and
stuggling to make it happen
- an overview of what it is that people are struggling with; many of the
same issues and same concerns - people, values, managing performance,
solutions that have worked etc - from around the world. Mostly US-based
(sometimes you US guys forget the rest of the world by the way) but also
good input from Europe and even my Southern Hemisphere colleages such as
At
- some books and articles that come recommended and pre-read + WWW sites
- and every now and again, a personal message from someone on the list.
I've had a couple of these that I found very encouraging
What do I not benefit from?
- people spending too much time pushing their own barrow or that of the
"guru" they have found always has the solution; this is a subjective thing
of course, and my comments are directed to nobody in particular
- naked aggression; again subjective, but easier to agree on
- closed minded posts: this is how it is, not "this is how I see it" I
too am guilty of the sin of objectifying my subjectivity of course!
Thanks are due-
of course to Rick for his moderation. I have no criticims at all of this
aspect of the list, and frankly Rick, I am in awe of your commitment to
us, most of whom you have never met! Thank you for the time you spend for
our benefit.
