I would like to introduce myself to subscribers
I am a Principal Adviser, Human resources with the Department of
Natural Resources. This is a State Government Department in Queensland
Australia.
My interest in learning organisations has stemmed from the work I
have been doing over the last 20 months or so to implement a workforce
planning process into my department. Whilst this has been fairly
successful I have become increasingly disenchanted with the rather
mechanistic approach to developing people that workforce planning has
brought about. By this I mean the supply, demand, gap analysis approach
which identifies a range of supposed training gaps to be filled.
On reflection, it started to occur to me that ideally we need to
develop the capability of the people in our organisation so that they are
able to continually assess the future impacts on our department. We also
need to create an environment where staff continually respond to these
impacts by developing new learning's that enable them to adapt to our
future needs.
These thoughts are what have brought me on this journey to look at
learning organisations, to see if the concepts that underpin learning
organisations can help me conceptualise what I think we need to do.
I have started with The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook as this seems
to be a useful reference tool. Though, I am not sure if the hierarchy in
my department is ready for this, there are pockets in the department where
I might be able to plant some seeds.
This list also seems to be a good place for me to explore ideas
and increase my learning.
I look forward to the forthcoming dialogue.
