Greetings John:
I understand the dilemma you find yourself in. I can't point you to
specific literature, but I can direct you to a tool which I've found most
helpful in working with both perspectives.
If you're familiar with the concept of mind mapping, there is a wonderful
piece of software that will do that, and then also provide a nice linear
outline of the map that's been created. You can check the software out
at: www.mindman.com (BTW: I don't work for these folks, I just use the
product.... there are others out there, this just happens to be the one I
use).
I was in a situation where several members of my staff were very linear in
their view of the world. On the occasions when I mind mapped our staff
meetings you can imagine the discomfort that emerged. The outline function
of MindMan really helped to make the notes of the meetings have greater
relevance for all.

that began as a mindmap and then became a narrative trip write-up. It can
