Harriett,

You might try The Knowledge Creating Company by Ikujiro Nonaka and
Hirotaka Takeuchi (Oxford, 1995). This quite readable book focuses on how
Japanese enterprises create knowledge. In the course of that, you learn a
lot about how Japanese leadership works. The authors also explore the
difference between Western and Japanese philosophical approaches. Towards
the end, there is some interesting discussion of the conflicts and
resolutions that came about when US/European firms did joint ventures with
Japanese.

I also suggest the works on national culture by Geert Hofstede and the
duo, Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner. These gentlemen have
done extensive research into the differences among different national
cultures and the roots of those differences.

I trust that this is helpful.

Ben Torrey
