Replying to LO28637 --
Almost every training seminar I have attended in the Australian public
service, has been typified by the 'therapeutic lie'. While working for
Telstra I attended a training course on TQM. When it came time to discuss
leadership, the branch manager made sure he was elsewhere. He had no
interest whatsoever in analysing his own deficiencies, however everyone
else was expected to do this.
Workers in all industries are generally aware when they are being lied to,
some become hardened to it, and accept it as part of life.
When a consultant is employed by management to deliver a training course,
he/she must try to overcome the effects of years of lies, hypocrisy and
manipulation, in many cases.
Any training course directed at workplace change is received by workers
with the understanding that the CEO (or rather his management people) may
not be genuine in their declared support for any new system.
My advice to any consultant offering training, is to assess the
organisational management culture (you can smell it from outside in the
street). If it stinks, don't waste your time trying to train their
people, unless you simply want to grab the money and run.
