This is an invitation for you to participate in an international,
electronic conversation about workplace learning.

"70 % of what people learn at work they learn
via INFORMAL LEARNING"

--1996 study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Despite the overwhelming role of informal learning in employee
development, little is known about how this kind of learning happens!

The Education Development Center (EDC) is directing a $1.8 million
research study, the Teaching Firm Project**, into how learning at work
occurs in seven, high-performance work organizations in the U.S.
including:

Motorola
The Boeing Company
Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution, LLC
Ford Electronics
Merry Mechanization, Inc.
Reflexite North America

From this research we are developing a classification of informal
learning activities, the types and content of learning occurring, and
facilitators and hindrances to this kind of learning. At the same
time, we are investigating the the economic impact of informal
learning on the individual and the firm.

We invite you to participate in this electronic conversation with
employers, educators, and public policymakers to craft the future of
learning at work. We are interested in your ideas, experiences, and
related knowledge on this topic as we create and implement specific
applications for our findings and transform the practice of workplace
learning.

**This study is supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the U.S.
Department of Labor, and six states who are interested in the use of
incentives to promote the development of a high performance workforce.
