Human beings need organizations and organizations need human beings. We
all want better organizations and that is why consulting has been so
lucrative in the past few years. Salley Helgeson' s book "The Web of
Inclusion" illustrates a different kind of structure that seems to work
for the companies she references. Structure of organizations seem to be
the key. Restructuring can be dangerous if you do it thoughtlessly. Even
your immediate family can be thought of as an organization. There
definitely is a structure, rules, values, and some conflict (especially if
you have teenagers). We are all a part of a system, we are influence
through our environment. We all want to be part of something. Maslow's
Hierarchy of needs include a need to belong. If you don't fit in the
organization that you work for, you may have to start something that you
do fit into. It makes sense to me let others who have the same goals, and
values as yourself to join in and create something great. Everyone wins.
We spend too much time at work not to be happy and satisfied. However
that doesn't mean you won't have to endure a little pain for the long term
benefit.
