It does not surprise me that your group wants to forge ahead and "do". I
see that behavior in nearly every group formed to do what you have
described. It seems like human nature to want to move forward quickly.
I have personally found it valuable to tell the group (and the boss needs
to know this up front) that you need to "start slow to move fast". That
in order to be sure you are headed in the *right* direction, you need to
evaluate *all* directions.
It also is helpful to recap with a list of "what we have learned" when
doing what it sounds like you wanted to do. Participants will feel less
like they really didn't accomplish anything with the time spent.
You may also point out that the more time you take to plan, the better the
plan will unfold. And without a plan or with a faulted plan, nothing will
happen anyway.
