Martin said, "I suppose the question I am asking is how to get peple not
to just do something but to stand there! Is there an unseen dynamic at
play that one can interrupt? e.g"

Part of the dynamic is that you want to solve the problem by asking even
more questions. You might try interrupting that. Can you think of some
other ways to help the group learn?

I get the impression that that even before your presentation, your boss
had many unanswered quesitons in mind. It sounds as if you were asking
questions that pointed out even more uncertainty. I can imagine that
adding even more uncertainty may have been overwhelming for your boss.

"I thought others may have encountered this kind of thing, since asking
questions is the key to learning."

There are many good ways to learn. Asking questions is one. Another is
to take action and pay attention to what happens.
