Malcolm,
I have yet to find a really good book dedicated to executive
coaching, but have found these to be helpful:
"Masterful Coaching," by Robert Hargrove (Pfeiffer, 1995) [The
closest to a LO approach.]
"The Last Word on Power," by Tracy Goss (Currency, 1996)
"The Tao of Coaching," by Max Landsberg (Knowledge Exchange,
1997) [Very basic intro.]
"Lessons From the Art of Juggling," by Michael J. Gelb and Tony
Buzan, (Harmony Books, 1994) [Includes a great chapter on
"Becoming the Ultimate Coach."]
"Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior," by Phil
Jackson and Hugh Delehanty (Hyperion, 1991995) [I'm not a
basketball fan, but there are some wonderful lessons in this book
about coaching, leadership, and teams; for example, "Being aware
is more important than being smart."]
"The Power of Mindful Learning," by Ellen J. Langer
(Addison-Wesley, 1997) [Not specifically a coaching book, but an
excellent book about learning, which I have been mindful of when
coaching.]
Also, I have found it extremely useful to use Myers-Briggs or
Social Styles in coaching. I recommend "People Styles at Work,"
by Robert Bolton and Dorothy Grover Bolton (Amacom, 1996). There
are numerous excellent books available on the MBTI. For info
about the MBTI, contact Type Resources, Inc.,
http://www.type-resources.com. I've recently begun to study the
FIRO-B, and think it will be useful as well. Check out "The Human
Element," by Will Schutz (Jossey-Bass, 1994).
I'll be interested to see what others have found useful.
Robert
