Brock, what a great question!
As a boss, I wanted people to care about me and see that I was just
another person, like them. Some could. Others couldn't for a variety of
reasons. Many people feel they need the boss as a scapegoat. Others feel
they give up power if they don't have someone to blame.Without a
scapegoat, the finger has to start pointing inward.
I have also worked loyally for a Boss I didn't care for, but I respected
him and his ability to move the system and accomplish aims I believed
in. I have also been in a situation where I had lost respect for the
Boss and left. The system didn't change. I did.
As a coach, I see that many bosses are pushed on from above(Board
members) and they then push down on the people that work for them. This
has happened more and more as companies are acquired and merge. I urge
people to manage up or try to understand what the boss needs to
accomplish and help out. In many cases it works.
Brock, as to your decision...my thoughts: many people have 2nd thoughts
about decisions they have made. Mostly, thoughtful people like you make
the right decision...especially in the long run.
