Hi. I am Jackie and I am in my fourth of six semesters of a Master's
Program in Nursing Leadership at Sonoma State University in California. I
work as a Home Health Nurse.

Within the last month, two of our Home Health Agencies (HHAs) combined
individual licenses to become one large agency. Although we belong to the
same organization, the communication, scheduling and work styles differ.
Each feels their way is right. Besides the merger, our agency is preparing
for accreditation for Nov. 2 - 6. In addition, the government has
established OASIS (OutcomesASsessmentInformationSystem). To cut down on
fraudulent billing and in order to assess outcomes, the first-ever
national outcomes database will be established. The first set of data is
required by the government in Jan 1999. The field staff (nurses) will be
required to obtain over 100 bits of patient data. Most of them haven't
heard the term OASIS yet. The learning curve is very steep.

A learning org is one in which peoplecontinually increase their capacity
to produce results they really care about. How do you get them to
really care when they're on "system overload"?
