Perhaps you have adopted a too-limited understanding of one or the other.
I work in the world of information technology. I also serve on the board
of a non-profit which assists people with mental illness. For me,
-technology- focuses on electronic things -- computers, printers. For
them, -technology- focuses on psychopharmacology -- drugs which can
alleviate the chemical imbalance which precipitates some forms of mental
illness. Same word but very different connotations.

When I check out my handy Random House Collegiate Dictionary, and look up
-technology-, I see this for definition number 2: the application of
knowledge for practical ends. Hmmmm. Any connections given that
definition?
