Replying to LO18472 --

I'm joining this debate a bit late, I'm afraid. However, I am interested
by the differences in types of response.

With Roger Stuart, I entered into the topic of "managerial compencies" (or
competences) with many similar questions. The search for a single set of
managerial competencies (or indeed competencies associated with any other
"profession") appears to me rather like the ultimate proof of possession
of the "elixir of life ~ you won't know that you haven't got it until you
die!

Now, that is not to say that "competencies" don't exist. Rather, we would
argue that the definition (and flavour) of "Competence" changes ~ and, if
and when this occurs, so must the composition (and style) of the list of
competencies.

If you'd like to look more at this, I'd refer you to our papers in Journal
of European Industrial Training ("Operating beyond the frame of management
competenc(i)es: towards a contextually embedded framework of managerial
competence in organisations [1997] ~Vol.21, No. 5, pp 26-33 and
"Reconstruing competence" [1997]Vol. 21. Numbers 8 & 9, pp 326 - 332).

I hope that these inputs add to the debate.

Best wishes

Philip R Lindsay
